Tayo Olayode is an exceptional and innovative Nigerian artist who graduated from Ahmadu Bello University with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art, majoring in painting, in 1998. His artistic repertoire encompasses a diverse range of mediums, including paintings, sculptures, tapestries, and large-scale sculptures displayed in public spaces across Nigeria. Olayode’s artistry is characterized by his fascination with unique textures and unconventional applications, leading him to experiment with complex techniques and styles that span abstraction, realism, and surrealism.
As a young artist, Olayode had the privilege of being mentored by renowned African artists such as Professors Abayomi Barber, Jerry Buahri, Ablade Glover, and celebrated realist Abiodun Olaku. His works have been prominently featured in local and international auctions and exhibitions, finding their place in important private and institutional collections. Notable commissions include the Eco tree at the Lagos state governor’s office in Alausa, created for the Lagos@50 project, and the Mega pipe at CMS walkway CMS Marina.
Olayode is not only a co-founder of the Iponri Art Studios but also holds the prestigious position of President of the Watercolour League and is a member of the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA).
His creative prowess extends to curatorial work as well, having co-curated exhibitions in Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya. In recognition of his talent, he was honored with the Terra Kultur/Ford Foundation art award for Best Young Artist in Nigeria in 2006, which enabled him to study under the guidance of Professor Ablade Glover in Ghana. Additionally, Olayode earned the Arthouse Foundation Scholarship, allowing him to participate in a residency at the esteemed Vermont Studio Cultural Exchange Program in 2014.
Throughout his career, Olayode has received numerous awards, including the Association of Fine Art Students (AFAS) Leadership Award during his tenure as AFAS President in 1997 – 1998. Currently based in Lagos, he continues to inspire and create remarkable art that captivates audiences far and wide.
