Biography

Bruce Onobrakpeya is a pioneering figure in Nigerian art, whose work is deeply rooted in the rich aesthetic and cultural traditions of Africa. A master of high-relief prints, bronzes, paintings, and installations, Onobrakpeya draws inspiration from West African history, philosophy, and decorative arts. His creations embody a blend of contemporary artistic expression and timeless African motifs, offering profound reflections on African identity and heritage.

A founding member of the Zaria Art Society during his time at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science, and Technology, Onobrakpeya and his peers, later known as the Zaria Rebels, sought to redefine Nigerian art by embracing postcolonial narratives. Their work challenged Western artistic dominance by celebrating African folklore, symbols, and cultural traditions.

Over the course of his distinguished career, Onobrakpeya’s art has gained international recognition, with exhibitions at prestigious venues such as the Tate Modern and the Venice Biennale. In 2013, he was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the National Museum of African Art, solidifying his legacy as one of Africa’s most influential contemporary artists. His work continues to resonate with collectors and art lovers worldwide, embodying the spirit and dynamism of African art.
