Jimo Akolo, born in 1935, is a renowned Nigerian artist known for his mastery in painting. He studied at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science, and Technology (NCAST) in Zaria, where he worked alongside members of the Art Society but never officially joined the group.
The Art Society, founded by NCAST students, sought to elevate the status of art in Nigeria and engage in discussions about Nigerian and broader West African culture. Prominent members like Uche Okeke conducted extensive research on Nigerian traditions, using their findings to explore the evolution of Nigerian art.
Their goal was to break away from colonial influences in art education and establish a distinctly Nigerian artistic identity. While advocating for cultural authenticity, members also acknowledged the value of European artistic techniques. Okeke, in particular, championed the idea of a “natural synthesis”—blending Nigerian and European styles to create a unique and progressive artistic movement.
